This lecture series is part of the general diploma topic, “How to House Europe? Within the Existing!” organized as part of the HouseEurope! Initiative at the Department of Architecture, ETH Zurich by station.plus.
It is a collective project aimed at finding architectural solutions to societal and planetary challenges. The lecture series will feature selected experts from various fields, offering a broader understanding of the topic. Each chair will address the theme through their unique methodology and architectural approach, focusing on both design and legislative aspects.
The premise of this year’s diploma program centers on the potential of the existing building stock: currently, only 25% of Europe’s buildings have been renovated. With an annual renovation rate of just 1%, we need to triple this to meet the European climate goals for 2050. Meanwhile, Switzerland is projected to see a population increase of 1 million people by 2050. This is a call for architects to act and address the challenge: How do we house these people? Within the existing structures!
